§
THE RHODOPES – On the paths of ORPHEUS and EURYDICE PROJECT aims to restore roads existing from the past, and to build two new
up-to-date road transport and tourist destinations (city of Plovdiv – city of
Drama – city of Kavala) through the RHODOPE mountain between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Hellenic Republic:
·
The
main goal of the project is to restore the road and transport connections,
existing from years ago and from antiquity, on the so-called “Ancient Thracian
and Roman roads” between Bulgaria and Greece through reconstruction, further
building of the trans-border road infrastructure, and building of new
up-to-date transport and tourist roads, stations, and routes in a joint “Rhodopes”
Euroregion, where movement of tourists, workers, and light freight vehicles shall
be realized, with mutual exchange in the provision and utilization of tourist products
and services between the two countries;
·
The
next goal is to relieve the traffic of the heavy freight vehicles travelling on
the currently existing roads on the following routes:
- Sofia-Blagoevgrad-Kulata-Promahon-Seres;
- Sofia-Blagoevgrad-Gotse Delchev-Ilinden-Exohi-Kato
Nevrokopi;
- New road under construction on the route Plovdiv-Rudozem-Elidzhe-Xanthi;
- New road under construction on the route Plovdiv-Zlatograd-Thermes-Xanthi;
- New road under construction on the route Plovdiv-Smolyan-Arda-Paranesti;
§ For that purpose, the main flow of
tourists and workers, travelling through the largest cities of the South
Central region of Bulgaria – the cities of Plovdiv and Pazardzhik – should be
given the opportunity to travel on routes without heavy freight vehicles traffic,
and their construction as tourist travel routes through the Rhodope mountain from
the cities of Plovdiv and Pazardzhik, as the shortest and most direct routes
with final destination the cities of Drama and Kavala and the Aegean Sea ports,
between the two states and the following towns and villages by regions and
municipalities, as follows:
·
Dospat-“Tisovo” border checkpoint – Pazardzhik-Dospat-Drama-Kavala – on the
following route: Trakya Highway – city
of Pazardzhik – city of Peshtera – city of Batak – city of Dospat – village of
Barutin – Vladovo Dere road fork – Tisovo area – border pyramid-mark №190 on
the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, continuing on the following route: village
of Potami fork road – village of Micromilya – village of Papades – village of
Livadero – city of Drama – city of Kavala – on the territory of the Hellenic

following route: Trakya Highway – city of Plovdiv – city of Krichim – city of
Devin – village of Teshel – village of Trigrad – village of Kesten – border
pyramid-mark №154 on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, continuing on
the following route: village of Elatya – village of Skaloti – village of

or after crossing the border line along the same route with detour through:
city of Devin – village of Teshel – village of Buynovo – village of Kozhare
fork road – border pyramid-mark №156 on the territory of the Republic of
Bulgaria, continuing on the following route: village of Elatya – village of
Skaloti – village of Sidironero – village of Livadero – city of Drama – city of
Kavala – on the territory of the Hellenic Republic;
·
The
described tourist routes are situated at a distance of about 70 km from one
another in East-West direction, and at the same distance from the currently
existing border checkpoints;
·
The
same routes fall within the line of the so-called “most direct” and “shortest”
routes between the regions and the municipalities: Pazardzhik-Plovdiv-Devin-Dospat
from the Smolyan region on the part of the Republic of Bulgaria, and the
mentioned towns and villages from the Drama region on the part of the Hellenic
Republic, and they go through moderately populated areas and the least
urbanized territories of both countries in the area of the so-called “Green
diamond of the Rhodopes”;
·
The
shortest and most direct distances between the farthermost border municipal
centres along these transport routes is about 100 km between the cities of
Dospat and Drama, and also about 100 km between the cities of Devin and Drama, and
about 150 km to the city of Kavala, situated on the Aegean Sea coast;
·
Along
these two routes there are built and existing asphalt-paved roads, falling
within the category of II and III class road infrastructure, which largely
coincide with the so-called “ancient Thracian and Roman roads,” and for whose
restoration it shall be necessary to partially continue the construction and the
paving with asphalt of small sections, and to widen the already existing ones,
depending on their designated function;
·
The
utilization of these routes shall be a premise for development of these regions
and of separate sectors of the two countries’ economies – tourism, natural
treatment, and mountain agriculture; production and processing of food products
– fish products, mushrooms, forest fruits; processing of wood and wood products;
production of ecological foods; textile and knitwear production; hydraulic engineering
and production of energy from renewable sources;
·
The
given travel routes constitute a continuation for ensuring transport
accessibility to the mountain and sea tourist resorts and destinations Rhodopes
– Aegean Sea along the North-South transport road corridors, going through the
Republic of Rumania, and Danube Bridge 1 and Danube Bridge 2 – to the Hellenic
Republic;
·
The
main contribution of the project shall be to facilitate the encouraging of the
trans-border cooperation between the two countries for getting acquainted, establishing
and developing good-neighbourly and friendly relations, expanding business
contacts and investments between the two neighbour states. Building relations
in the spirit of mutual recognition of interests, traditions, and customs – which
shall set an example of good and leading Balkan policy for good-neighbourly
relations, understanding and friendship between the countries and the
population of Bulgaria and Greece and on the Balkans;
